Kenilworth
Kerri and Dennis McDonald remember:
The 'Kenilworth Winter Getaway' was held over 11 years on the Nambour show day weekend and will be fondly remembered by so many of our members. This wonderful weekend was started in 2012 by John and Karen Pearson as a once off event. Dennis and I enjoyed it so much that in 2013 we continued this as 'The Kenilworth Winter Getaway.'
It was enjoyed by many of us who camped at the Showgrounds on the edge of town either in tents, campers or vans while some stayed at the local pub. Other riders turned up on the morning for the ride and stayed with us for lunch.
We enjoyed glorious days with blue skies and on a few occasions overnight temperatures got down to zero. Two campfires roared each night, and many tales got even better as our happy hours continued. We loved our bike rides through the utterly beautiful, picturesque rolling green hills of Kenilworth. It was Jenny and Terry Lyons who organised a pop-up cafe each year on a grassy bank high above the Mary River. The logistics were very interesting to say the least.
It was so unique and simply wonderful. It happily surprised many new riders. A birthday cake was always baked to celebrate Ian Jope's birthday, and much fun was had. At the peak of this event there were 31 camp sites booked out plus pub stayers and up to 36 riders on each ride.
