The 20km Saturday Group

20/10/2025

Hello everyone, the 20k group, better known as the 'social' or 'rehab' group has been asked to be the 'November spotlight'!

Our group consists of 24 active and non-active members ranging in ages from 10-88yrs. We average 12-14 on a ride and we usually ride between 20-25 kms, our PB is 32kms!

Most members lead rides which is great and we give lots of help and encouragement to do so. Various assortment of bikes, hybrid, road and mountain bikes including 5 e-bikes.

Titbits from various members
"I initially joined the SCBTC and went to the 20's as a starting point before moving on to the 25's or perhaps the 30k group. But I quickly realised that I needn't move up as everything I required in a weekend bike ride was right there with the 20's, namely a steady casual ride along different paths and bikeways, with a diverse and interesting group of riders exploring different cafes and coffee shops all over the coast."

~~~~~~~~
"I joined to find my way around the coast."
~~~~~~~~

"In 2015 I was looking for some different exercise and fun social interaction, so I bought a Hybrid bike, which I still ride today. I wanted to gain some road riding confidence and skills, so I did a couple of council rides, then I came across a SCBTC calendar in a cycle shop. I rang Vince and he was very encouraging so off I set on my journey and under the tutelage and guidance of Vince and Robyn, I'm still there. Thank you."

~~~~~~~~
"I love our fun group and enjoy our outings. My goals have been met!
~~~~~~~~

On my first ever ride with the group I got a puncture, a long way from home.
An older male member with a bag of tricks offered to fix it and we all clustered around to learn how. He took the tube out and bought out a gas cylinder like 'thing' and proceeded to inflate the tube.

There was an almighty bang, almost like a gunshot and part of this thing flew off the valve and straight into my stomach. Shock horror and silence from everyone but fortunately I was ok, the tyre mended and off we set, and I'm still riding with them years later!"

~~~~~~~~
"A member bought along a friend and his 10-yr old son who rode with us for a few weeks. It appeared to work well but one or two riders had concerns about him riding with older riders and perhaps causing an accident. Most of us enjoyed the interaction and company of a youngster, and it was good to see the family riding together and also an opportunity for the child to learn some road rules and biking etiquette.
After much communication with the committee and a motion at the AGM, it has been decided that anyone over the age of 10 can ride with a parent or family member, must be a Club member and must ride near the rear of the group, but only in the 20km group at this stage."
What we don't like
  • grumpy rude pedestrians and motorists with Attitude
  • bad coffee and heavy rain
  • big hills, headwinds, and magpies swooping.
Favourite ride
Hard to pick but Mudjimba to Coolum.
Favourite coffee shop
Many but Coolum Patisserie. Sometimes the coffees last as long as the actual peddling!
Socially together we:
  • play the ukelele and attend music festivals
  • U3A rides Turtles group, and
  • play soccer.
What happens on a ride stays on a ride!
GOLDEN RULES
We don't leave anyone behind, and riders in the middle of the ride must always check that they can see the riders in front and behind and vice versa.
