Spotlight on Dr Marc Miller

Marc has been a much-loved member of our Club for many years, sharing countless kilometres, conversations, and friendships along the way. While Marc is no longer able to ride with us, his presence, humour, and passion for cycling continue to be felt strongly within our community.

This Spotlight is a celebration of the many rides, moments, and memories he shared with friends and fellow members. Those who rode alongside Marc know the joy he brought to each outing — and it's those stories, reflections, and connections that matter most.
In the words that follow, Marc's friends honour his journey, his friendships, and the enduring spirit he brought to our Club.

I have had a wonderful time travelling and riding with Marc and Jackie over a long time. When I first joined the SCBTC, Marc was a rider I certainly looked up to and for me was inspirational. I will always remember my vain attempts to keep up with him while riding a particularly steep hill in Caloundra. He is a fantastic athlete. Christine and I have had many great holidays, rides and social occasions with Marc, Jackie and friends. Lots of fun. A great friend to us.

Marc is a very dear friend who is the epitome of qualities we should all aspire to.
He has given a life of service to humanity. An erudite & a quiet achiever who with his beloved Jackie have voluntarily given so much to those less fortunate.

Marc is kind, a gentle giant & a great sportsman who loves cycling, swimming, hiking & importantly AFL!

Other loves are music, travel & being Grandie to six beautiful grandchildren. Aside from the usually quiet person you see, is one who also embraces fun & a good party!

Marc, I admire & commend your incredible faith, strength & acceptance in facing adversity.

It is indeed an honour to walk beside you in this life's journey.
HRH (aka Mary Long)

A quiet, gentle man, a perfect host, and a strong rider to boot.

We first met Marc and Jackie several years ago on their return from a holiday in the UK where they had joined the local cycling club for the duration of their stay. What a great way to get to know the local area! Since then, we have been lucky enough to share lots of short trips far and near with them. It was no surprise that Marc would usually have a couple of routes planned for us as we explored - whether it was the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane or New South Wales.

Marc has always been a strong rider. He's taken part in the Tour of Brisbane, Brissie to the Bay and the early rides from Landsborough to Brisbane in aid of the Cycle of Giving, plus mountain biking in New Zealand.

He cycled with the 40's for many years, always happy to be ride leader. More recently he decided to take it a bit easier with the 35's. Even then when you thought he was relaxing at the back of the group he would suddenly power past you on the hills - I don't think he could help himself! But then he does have the right physique for climbing. His record up Montville is to be envied.

He has taken his foot off the pedal for now and we will miss him on our rides.

He does have a merry band of young grandchildren though, so they will keep him busy. There's no chance he will be at a loose end, and looking on the bright side, I don't suppose he'll have to be up at 5am ready for action.

As Marc is not cycling at present, I want to acknowledge our friendship. We were blessed to meet Marc and Jackie through cycling and have shared many outings, gatherings, coffees and a fun filled holiday cycling the Alps to Ocean in New Zealand's South Island.

A memorable adventure for many reasons though one outstanding day was forever to be named by Marc in his quiet way as the 'Irish Bog Day'. We were assessing a treacherous crossing after heavy rain, decided against it, found a short cut through a farm and subsequently were covered in mud and manure with our boots, bikes unrecognisable.

We have many shared memories with Marc, a gentle and quiet man who spent his career caring for so many. We appreciate you, Jackie, our special friendship and it's a privilege having you as a valued friend.

Marc is a strong rider. We would be going up a hill and I'm thinking I'm going pretty well, then Marc would zoom past and disappear into the distance, casually waiting at the top for the rest of us to catch up.

Marc, while your riding days may be behind you, the friendships and memories you created will always ride on with our Club — thank you for the wonderful times you shared.
