Expressions of Interest
Mekong Delta Bicycle Tour, January 2027
We are seeking expressions of interest for a two-week bicycle tour through Vietnam's Mekong Delta in January 2027.
The idea is a small, sociable group exploring the Delta by bicycle — quiet roads and lanes, villages, canals, ferries, markets and local towns — travelling at a comfortable touring pace with plenty of time to stop, eat, drink coffee and experience the country along the way.
Why Vietnam?
Vietnam is a remarkably rewarding country to explore by bicycle. Away from the major highways, there is an extensive network of quieter roads, village lanes and canal-side routes, particularly in the Mekong Delta. Traffic can look chaotic at first, but it is generally slow and predictable, and scooters and cyclists are a normal part of everyday transport. With sensible route selection, it can be a very comfortable and enjoyable place to cycle.
The basics: approximately 14 days; 13th January 2027 to 28th January 2027; comfortable air-conditioned accommodation with single rooms as well as doubles; manageable daily distances; local food and cafés; and a maximum group of around 10 people.
Because this would be a club-style, self-organised tour rather than a commercial package, costs are substantially lower than comparable organised cycling holidays. Allow approximately AU$1,700–2,100 per person on the ground, excluding international flights, travel insurance and bicycle transport. Final costs will depend on the route and group size.
Bicycles: This trip is intended for conventional bicycles rather than e-bicycles. The Mekong Delta is very flat, so electric assistance is not required, and keeping everyone on ordinary bikes will make transport, storage and day-to-day logistics much simpler.
This is an expression of interest only. There is no commitment at this stage. If there is sufficient interest, a detailed route, daily distances, costs and practical arrangements will follow.
Tour organiser: Dr Alexander Bennett is an experienced independent touring cyclist who has completed more than 20 cycle tours overseas, including cycling in Vietnam. His emphasis is on safe, enjoyable touring and experiencing places at bicycle pace rather than simply covering kilometres.
